Entrance Statement

This project suffered from what I like to call the Westchester Landscape ‘Malaise’. An entrance with basic evergreens, that had been trimmed into geometric shapes for the past 20 years. The client wanted something different and unique, like their centered doorknob.

In addition to the entrance, there was a stone wall covered in climbing hydrangea that needed an upgrade.

Design Process

I knew from the start that we had to get rid of everything to accomplish our goals. The only item we kept was a mature Rhododendron ‘Roseum Elegans’, everything else was removed and a modern, asymmetrical design was created.

Plants

Feature plants such as ‘Sango Kaku’ Japanese Maple, Blue Atlas Cedar, and Moonglow Juniper were accented by ornamentals such as fountain grasses, variegated red twig dogwood, blue carex, and lambs ear.

Stone Wall

This stone wall was covered in climbing hydrangea for over a decade, it was removed to highlight the beauty and craftsmanship of the stone. Since we had a full sun environment, an mixed planting of herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses were used to create a pollinator destination.
